An introduction to Rent Arrears Letters

If your tenant is in arrears on their rent payments, it is worth sending them a rent arrears letter as a formal demand for them to pay their outstanding debts. The letter acts as a reminder to the tenant of their obligations under the tenancy agreement, and the potential consequences of not paying their rent on time.

The first step is to set the terms of the letter, using the terms tab. You will be asked to answer a few simple questions regarding the property and the rent arrears of the tenant.

Once you have saved the first draft, a preview will be ready to review under the preview tab.

Next, you will need to add the tenants to whom the rent arrears letter will be sent.

Your tenant will be sent an email, notifying them that you have invited them to collaborate on Legislate. They can create an account and login to preview the letter and be sure that they understand what the increase in rent is and from when it will start.


Both you and your tenant can use the activity tab to communicate with one another. For example, if your tenant has any questions regarding the letter you have sent them, this is a good place to ask.

You will also be notified by email if any messages are sent through the activity tab, so there is no need to worry about being out of the loop of communication.


Both parties are now able to sign the letter!
