Before setting up your new beauty or hairdressing services company you will need to incorporate your business. During the company incorporation process on Companies House, you will need to provide your company’s SIC code based on the nature of your business activities and services. There are over 600 SIC codes to choose from which can be overwhelming if your expertise is not in company formations. This article explains what a SIC code is and how to choose the appropriate SIC code for your new hairdressing business.

What are standard industrial classifications (SIC codes)?

A Standard industrial classification code (SIC code) is a five-digit code which describes a company’s economic activities and business services. These codes help the Office for National Statistics (ONS) track the state and growth of UK companies. The condensed SIC code list maintained by Companies House is available on the gov.uk website. A limited company can have multiple SIC codes. Dormant companies and non-trading companies are also required to have a SIC code.

Hairdressers can have multiple SIC codes depending on the nature of their business activities. A company's SIC code can also be updated via a confirmation statement if ever your property company's business activities evolve.

What is the SIC code for hairdressing and other beauty treatment activities?

Beauty and barber shops which offer hair washing, trimming and cutting setting, dyeing, tinting, waving, straightening and similar activities for a male and female clientele fall under the SIC 96020. This class includes barber shops that offer shaving and beard trimming as well as manicure and pedicure salons which offer pedicures, manicures, facial massage and make up services. This class excludes hairdressing shops which manufacture wigs which fall under the 32990 SIC code.

What is the SIC code for Physical well-being activities?

Beauty and barber shops which also offer physical well-being activities such as baths, sauna and steam baths, solariums, reducing and slimming salons, massage salons can have an additional SIC code which is 96040.

Once you have chosen a SIC code for your hairdressing company and finalised the incorporation process, you will need to generate employment or consultancy agreements to grow your team. Creating lawyer-approved agreements can be costly and it can be tempting to download free templates online.
